Eugénio Ribeiro
From HLT@INESC-ID
Eugénio Ribeiro obtained both a Bachelor (2010) and a Master's (2012) degrees in Information Systems and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. Additionally, he obtained a PhD (2023) in Computer Science and Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico as well, which was approved with distinction and honour. His first contact with research was in 2009, when he joined INESC-ID's Human Language Technologies Lab as an intern. Since then, he contributed to several research projects covering multiple subjects in the Natural Language Processing (NLP) area. Overall, he contributed to research work that led to more than 20 peer-reviewed publications, including 5 articles in international journals. These publications have been cited over 150 times according to Google Scholar. Furthermore, Eugénio was part of the teams that achieved first place in two research challenges. He is also a teaching assistant for the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DEI) at Instituto Superior Técnico since 2013. He has lectured four different courses, at both the undergraduate and Master's levels, and consistently received awards of teaching excellence. Additionally, Eugénio contributed to the organization of scientific events, served as a reviewer, participated in knowledge-transfer projects, supervised students, and served as a trainer in multiple contexts.
Eugénio is interested in Artificial Intelligence in general, but his research mostly focuses on the Natural Language Processing (NLP) area. His PhD focused on dialog systems and, more specifically, on how they can extract knowledge from the dialog and use it to learn and improve their capabilities. Thus, this area has been his main research interest for several years. In this context, he has addressed several tasks, such as intention recognition, knowledge extraction, semantic network creation, dialog policy learning, and natural language grounding. Additionally, in the context of other projects, he developed research work on several other tasks, such as the recognition of multiple speech characteristics and phenomena, multilinguality, curiosity modeling, topic mining, review analysis, semantic search, and text difficulty and readability assessment, among others.
